Fine Woodworkers of Austin Meeting July 2, 2009

July 7th, 2009 by Nathan Fontenot in Meeting Minutes

No new members or visitors in attendance.

Bill Mccaffery mentioned that he had a tablesaw for sale (with a sled and casters), Charlie Plesums mentioned that he had a RAS saw for sale. Please contact them for availability and pricing.

Rob Harris gave a presentation of the history and evolution of handplanes. A copy of this is available on the Documents Page.

Charlie Plesums brought a quilters cabinet for Show-and -Tell. This consisted of a small end table sized cabinet with removable drawers which were stackable for eas transport of sewing materials. The quilters cabinet also had an inventive set of partial doors that would lock the drawers in but do not cover the entirety of the front of the cabinet.

Following this a lengthy and lively discussion about the clubs lingerie chest project consumed the remaining of the meeting. Several aspects of the design were covered including overall design, carcase construction, and materials.

  • The club discussed which type of panel to use in the sides of the case, rasied panel vs. flat panel. It was decided to use a flat panel.
  • It was also decided that the back would finished like the sides, flat panel, instead of a simply dadoing in a piece of plywood.
  • A review of previous discussions reminded everyone that we were going to have seven graduated drawers in the lingerie chest.
  • A long discussion ensued on how to attach the top to the carcase and how to attach the carcase to the legs/bottom. The consensus was to use a chest-on-table style of design instead of a chest-on-chest design.
  • The use of dust panels was discussed along with methods of attaching the dust panels to the carcase. A decision started to form around using sliding dovetails for attaching the dust panels to the sides, but this was not confirmed as it was not decided upon if the dust panels would show or if the drawer fronts would cover them.
  • Bill McCaffery mentioned a great video that discussed elements of design, Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design

Bill McCaffery discussed trying to put together a bulk wood order by the club to hopefully get a good deal on wood.
